Japan Trip 3 : Cycling to Jodogahama Beach

Jodogahama Beach

The reason I visited Miyako is to take Sanriku Tetsudo train to Kuji where is my highlight destination in Iwate. However Miyako also has the famous place such as Jodogahama Beach that is ranked on the beautiful beach in Japan.

Since I was here in Miyako. Why should I not go to it?

There are many ways to go to Jodogahama Beach. The economical ways for me are take the bus and cycling. At first I wanted to take a bus but the bus and Santetsu train schedules were too closed. So I rode a bicycle instead.

Tourist information center in front of Miyako Station can lend bicycles to visitors for free. Just register at the counter inside and staff will give the map with the bicycle route written on it. She was also kind to bring me to where the bicycles were parked nearby the station.

Although the bicycle was an old and ordinary. Its gears and break were good.

The route written by staff is 3 km. long and takes about half an hour to go to the beach. However there was a construction that blocked the road. I had to go toward the north more then went back to the original route.

The points I think it’s hard for occasional rider like me is there are 2 steep hills on the route. The first one is on the corner which bring you to the north.

The second one is the path that go to the destination. This hill is extremely steep so the normal bike can’t handle this. On the way back you have to be careful when you ride downhill. If you can’t break on time, you will finished in the sea.

It took about 40 minutes to reach a parking lot of Jodogahama Visitor Center. It’s a part of Sanriku Fukko National Park where is on Sanriku Coast from Hachinohe in Aomori to Kesenuma in Miyagi.

Below the parking lot are a walking trail along the coast and Miyako Jodogahama Boat Cruise pier.

To go down to the trail. There are a elevator and stair in the visitor center.

A Tunnel is at the end of the path.

Let’s see where the tunnel brought me to.
